1st judging round of the Discovery Challenge

Getting ideas

St Andrews Estates (Scotland) Ltd&Brian Frame

Generate and screen business ideas Brainstorm, etc and case exercises to "screen". Screen team generated ideas. Reform teams and rescreen. Design and produce own business cards. Elevator pitch presentation.

In this first round you will be judged on the short pitch that you give and the ability to convey your plan clearly and quickly in the time given. This presentation will be in front to f the rest of the group.

2nd Judging round of the Discovery challenge

Marketing planning

Alan Honig & Jim Patrick

Prepare a marketing plan by focussing on defining the market and considering:1. Is there a real opportunity? 2. Is it winnable? 3. Is it worth winning? 4. If all 3 prior conditions are satisfied, what will it take to achieve a profitable outcome?

In this round you will be asked to fill out a worksheet and give a presentation on your marketing plan in front of the group and you will be judges on the amount of detail and information that you have put in to your presentation.

3rd Round of the Discovery Challenge

Financial planning

James Keiller Estates Ltd & Vivian Bisset

Prepare financial projections for a start up Build sales budget, operations budget, cash flow and P&L. Use Excel spreadsheet on pc. Cash flow presentation.

In this round you will be given a P&L spread sheet with all the formulas and details pre-programmed. You will be judges on the amount of detail and fore thought that you have put in to the numbers.

Final round of the Discovery Challenge

Lion’s den

This round is split in two sections. The first is worth 30%. You will make a 15 minute presentation in front of the “lions” and the rest of the group. There will be a winner on the night for the best pitch and they will win the RBS Lions den trophy.

The second part of this round is the business plan that you will submit on the night. This will carry 40%. The more detail, feasibility and research that goes it to this the better.
