Careers, Networking and Business Skills relevant training opportunities

Whether you are contemplating a career in business, or pursuing an academic route (understanding potential impacts of your research), you can't afford to miss this opportunity to find out from company CEOs in EPSRC fields such as Steve Parkes (Star-Dundee), Paul Farley (Tag-Games), Graeme Malcom (M Squared Lasers Ltd), Colin MacDonald (Realtime Worlds) and Pentech Ventures as to their approach to Innovation and Enterprise/their routes to their current positions.

Join us for this half-day city campus based event on the morning of Wednesday 24th of March featuring talks, a Question and Answer Session and a fantastic opportunity to speak to business leaders, and find out what support the University has to offer for future entrepreneurs. The forum will be followed by a networking lunch giving you the opportunity to speak directly to the CEO's, and to network  with other colleagues in the University involved and interested in the commercial aspects of research.

This event is free and open to all interested University research staff and students.

Sign up here to reserve a place before Friday 19th March.

Tuesday evenings Lions' Den

Last night the first seven teams in the Enterprise Gym Discovery Challenge took to the stage to pitch their business ideas to a panel of four judges. The judges or “Lions” were Ian Stewart of James Keiller Estates Ltd, Jim Patrick of Blue Square, Brian Frame of Rautomead and Steven Ayre, BOS.
Pitches were all of a high standard and the teams managed to answer the questions asked of them with accuracy and enthusiasm. Once all the teams had had their opportunity to pitch, the judges deliberated and came to a decision - the winner of the Lions’ Den cup; Peachy&Beau.
Presentation of Lions' Den Cup

Ian Stewart presented Jenny Sime and Kyle McKelvie from Peachy&Beau with their trophy (see photo above).

The next Lions’ Den will take place on Thursday when the remaining 6 teams will pitch their ideas to the “Lions”. We look forward to it!

Tuesday evenings Lions' Den

Seven teams take to the stage to pitch their business ideas to a panel of four judges.

Can you survive the Lions’ Den?

This week we have arrived at the final session of the Discovery Challenge Competition workshops!!

All teams will get the opportunity to stand up in front of four “Lions”, the EGym management team, and an audience of spectators and pitch their business plan for the title of the Enterprise Gym Lions’ Den Winner.

The “Lions” on Tuesday evening will be Ian Stewart of James Keiller Estates Ltd, Jim Patrick of Blue Square, Brian Frame of Rautomead and Steven Ayre, BOS; on Thursday John Dowie, RBS will be taking Stevens place and joining the panel.
Each of the teams, kitted up in full business gear, will get 5 minutes to pitch their idea (this should include their 30 second elevator pitch) followed by 5 minutes of question time.

I know it can be a nerve-wracking experience for some, but this round really can change the look of the leader board dramatically - counting for 15% of the overall result of the Discovery Challenge. Make your idea shine and you could be the team walking away with the £1,000 top prize in a matter of weeks.

Attending Tuesday evenings session? Then sign up here!! For Thursday evenings session, sign up here. The pitching will kick off at 5.30pm - be sure to be there sharp so you don’t miss out on the fun.

Good luck to all the teams!!

World Water Day

On World Water Day, 22 March 2010 - which this year communicates messages on water quality, ecosystems and human well-being - the UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science at the University of Dundee will be hosting an interactive online event focused on Hydrology, Environment, Life and Policy (HELP) river basins in Scotland, supported by Be2camp.

Click here to see the event page (agenda, etc);
download the World Water Day flyer (PDF)

The University of Dundee will lead discussions with respect to the Tweed; and the Macaulay Institute will provide comparisons regarding the Dee. There will also be an international comparison of the Tweed and Thames HELP river basins, led by the University of Dundee HELP Centre. The focus throughout will be HELP and the interface between land use and water management, and how we crystallise a stakeholder driven agenda for effective river basin management in Scotland.

This innovative event will be a collective gathering of knowledge, expertise and opinion from amongst HELP stakeholders primarily in Scotland, but also globally. Everyone attending the event, online or face-to-face, will be the beneficiaries of the project. These people will primarily be practitioners and stakeholders in the public and voluntary sectors in the Tweed and Dee river basins - often distributed across many small towns and smaller settlements in often remote parts of the country. Hence the use of an online environment to support the day.

To attend the event in Dundee, please email Daniel Gilbert. If you plan to participate in the event online, please register here and it would also be helpful if you could RSVP (above right). We plan to stream the event video live to the web, and to provide an interactive "live blog" throughout the afternoon.
